for suspended sheriff ross mirkarimi. christie smith is live in san francisco where the board of supervisors will decide the fate of the embattled sheriff. christie, this case is about a year in the making. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, marla. well, this whole ordeal finally expected to come to an end after nine months of legal wrangling and a very public drama that played out here in san francisco. later this afternoon the san francisco board of supervisors expected to finally take a vote on whether or not to remove suspended san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi from office. it would take nine votes from the 11-member board for that to happen. mirkarimi pleaded guilty after an argument with his wife. she is a tv star from venezuela. in that argument she suffered a bruised arm. mirkarimi is on probation and in counseling and the couple has

reunited and said this whole thing was politically motivated. after mirkarimi pleaded guilty, san francisco mayor ed lee suspended him, then tried to take steps to remove him from office. in august the ethics commission decided that mirkarimi had committed official misconduct and that set the stage for the vote today. in the middle of all this, anti-domestic violence advocates have rallied and called for his removal, but he also has a number of supporters, including a group called friends of ross. they'll actually hold a noon-time rally here on the steps of city hall before that vote at 2:00 this afternoon. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." it is 5:02. at this hour the president is in san jose, likely asleep at his hotel. a little later on he'll head to san francisco this morning to wrap up his latest visit to the bay area. just hours ago we shot this video of the president's motorcade arriving back at the hotel intercontinental.

that is where bob redell -- he's live at sfo where air force one is waiting for the president to take him off to that next campaign stop. bob, what's happening out there? good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. president barack obama will be leaving sfo a little bit later this morning with a new bundle of money for his re-election campaign. the president arrived yesterday afternoon. by last night in the span of just a few hour, he had already raised almost $4 million through three different fund rarzors. only 25 people attended a gathering paying $40,000 apiece, raising about 1 million. then mr. obama had dinner at the bill graham civic auditorium with 100 supporters and finally last night he spoke to 6,000 people inside the auditorium, raising another million dollars. during his speech the president criticized governor mitt romney, his opponent, criticizing his performance during last week's

debate. >> a few nights ago, suddenly a guy pretending to be mitt romney stood on a stage next to me. and said he's changing his plan. he's just going to pretend it doesn't exist. what $5 trillion tax cut? i don't know anything about a $5 trillion tax cut. don't pay attention to that tax cut behind the curtain. >> reporter: the president urged supporters at that private dinner at the auditorium to be almost obsessive in talking with friends in battleground states like ohio, which is exact low where he'll head when air force one departs from sfo here later this morning. reporting live here at sfo, bob redell, "today in the bay." 5:04 this morning. another president will be visiting northern california. former president bill clinton will attend a campaign rally at

uc davis. he's in town to support several congressmen who are in the middle of tight races. president clinton has been keeping busy this election season. he's been in the forefront lending his support to president obama and other major candidates. early voting begins in san francisco today. the department of elections will be open from 8:00 to 5:00 monday through friday through november 6th. well, the a's facing elimination in the playoffs, but there is a bright side. they have the energy of the home crowd to feed off of tonight. >> comcast sportsnet jim kozimor is live at o.co where the a's fans are looking toward to their first playoff game in six years and hoping and praying it won't be the last. >> reporter: good morning. it's going to be loud here in 13 hours when all the fans pack the coliseum. for the athletics, they have to be scratching their head. they're the top seed in the alds but what do they have to show for it but a 0-2 hole.

. welcome back. giving you a live look at san francisco. you can see the giants flag getting a little flap from the light breeze. we'll check the forecast with christina in just a bit. it is 5:12. the power of social media could have an impact on teen health. university of colorado researchers had a group of teens join several facebook groups. one joined a community focus on safe sex. the other joined a peer group which focused and talked about general topics. several months later, researchers found teens in the safe sex group were 12% more likely to use condoms than in the other group. facebook meantime wants to pay you $10 for your picture. scott mcgrew joins with us that. >> you may recall facebook experimented with the idea of using people's profile pictures in advertisements. for instance, if i click the like button on ford motor company, your timeline would

have an advertisement up in the corner with my name on it endorsing ford. facebook users sued. facebook stopped and offered to pay a charity millions of dollars as a way of saying sorry. not good enough so facebook is offering $10 to anyone whose picture was used. this idea will go back in front of a judge. santa clara based anti-virus company mcafee will layoff workers. this according to reuters. they were purchased by intel last year. the ceo pointing out the company hasn't added a job in california in ten years. the computer industry is suffering because of the popularity of tablets and smartphones. let's get the rest of the news before the bell. we turn to courtney reagan this morning. she's live at cnbc world headquarters. good morning, courtney. >> reporter: good morning to you, scott. futures are lower this morning as investors hear the imf cut its forecast for economic growth. stocks fell on very light volume. there wasn't economic data to

trade on because of the columbus day holiday. earnings season does kick off this afternoon when alcoa reports their quarter results. today is also the fifth anniversary of the dow hitting its all-time record high of 14,164. the dow is just 580 points off that mark. the dow did slip 26 to 13,583. the nasdaq fell 23 to 3112. with a month to go before we head to the polls, several companies are rolling out election-themed pr stunts. pizza hut will give free pizza for life to nanyone who asks president obama or mitt romney if they prefer sausage or pepperoni at their town hall next week. the questions are prescreened but pizza hut is someone will ask anyway. they have cabbage patch dolls and jetblue will help anyone leave the country temporarily if the other guy wins in november, whoever the other guy is for that person.

we want to start with some of your temperatures. we are in the 40s and 50s. 56 in oakland, 49 in concord and 56 in san francisco. so when it comes to the showers, i'm not expecting rain delays. i do think they'll be pesky and light at best so keep that in mind if you're headed out to that game. all we know is we are backing our boys, both the giants and a's as we head through tonight. area of low pressure cut off from the jetstreams are that's whyth been sitting and rotating out in the pacific. the next 48 hours, it finally gets that push it needs from another area of low pressure that will bring us rain next week. it's that time of year, as you know. so this is what we're looking at. we stop the clock at 5:00 a.m. and you can see here nothing until noon. we continue that futurecast until 11:00 p.m. tonight into tomorrow morning. we're not going to see a whole lot of activity. that's the good news. just because our futurecast isn't picking it up, we could see isolated showers move over the oakland coliseum as we head throughout this evening so keep

that in mind. you might want to protect your hair with something like a bag, ladies. i don't think they allow umbrellas at o.co. 72 in los gatos. here is your official forecast. game time, first pitch, 64 degrees. you'll drop to about 62 degrees. if we see any showers, i believe they will be at the very, very end as the system is really slowing down. it's not going to get the push it needs until later tonight. the next couple of days we lose that rain chance. by thursday. we cool you off thursday into friday and saturday and sunday a warmup on the way. sunday and monday looking to be the best if you want to hit the beach. mike, what do you like on your pizza? i'm so curious? >> i love pesto pizza. i like a little changeup there with veggies and a lot of meat too. anything, as long as it's pizza, i don't care. we're looking over here at the south bay, northbound routes looking pretty nice right now. we do have a construction zone south 880 out of milpitas and

heading down toward brokaw, so there is some slowing. crews likely on the move over the next half hour so we'll see some slowing for our sensors. also the mission boulevard on-ramp from 880 either direction. reportedly closed. look here, top of the screen we do see slowing approaching the area, but a live look shows you the actual traffic volume heading right here where those sensors are showing not a big deal both directions. northbound with the taillights away from us. the new sign lights up at 5:00 so it may be a distraction as folks get used to that but not much of an issue. other side of the bay a smooth drive as well. northbound, not a problem. southbound right here at the edge of the screen you see the crews blocking all but one lane and they're on the move down toward oregon expressway so allow some slowing there. and the bay bridge toll plaza, volume building a tiny about it but no problem for the cash lanes and certainly not for the fastrak. 5:18. good news from alaska airlines.

a computer glitch that delayed almost 80 flights across the west coast yesterday has been fixed and alaska air flights are back online. the company says a severed fiber optic cable was to blame for those delays. we checked this morning, all flights in and out of bay area airports are running close to normal. marla, despite some recent moves by governor jerry brown, gas prices are holding steady. the latest numbers show an average price for a gallon of regular gas in california rose by one cent overnight. it is averaging $4.67. over the weekend, governor jerry brown signing an order telling the state air resource board to begin producing that winter blend of gas. experts seem to think that we could see some kind of relief hopefully later on this week. 5:19. new plans to prevent foreclosures in one bay area city. we'll have the details next. plus the death-defying stunt, at least he's praying

look at that, go green and gold. oakland a's trying to stay alive in the playoffs with their game tonight in oakland. we'll bring you live reports throughout the morning. it's 5:22. oakland mayor jean quan and bay area legislators will announce a new strategy to help families facing foreclosure. they want to create an outreach program. city agencies will also work with banks on loan modifications. not every resident will be eligible. homeowners must show they can pay on time. city council members will go over that plan today. how much pg&e will pay for the deadly san bruno blast --

how much will they have to pay, the answer will be decided it turns out behind closed doors. a judge has approved a request to suspend public hearings and hold closed door negotiations on this matter. local lawmakers are protesting this decision. they say the pipeline talks should not be hidden from public scrutiny. the judge says the suspension will allow a quicker settlement. eight people were killed and dozens of homes destroyed in the explosion on september 9th of 20 ten. this is taking it to a new level. an australian man planning to jump from 23 miles up in the air to try to break the sound barrier. weather permitting -- actually right now this is on hold. his balloon has been delayed about an hour. they were going to take off about 5:00 local time. we're being told that will happen at 6:20 our time if the winds die down. he'll be wearing a specially made suit an he'll jump from 23 miles up. this is mind blowing.

he's expected to reach speeds of 690 miles per hour. for reference, a boeing 747 typically cruises at a mere 565 miles per hour. now, if, if all goes well, he will land in new mexico ten minutes after he jumps. again, winds have delayed that. got to make sure the conditions are right. it should go off, scheduled for 6:20 local time. >> scary stuff. calm winds here in the bay area. i just saw a flag that was slightly flapping in the wind. christina loren, how's it looking? it is cold. >> it's a cold start to the day. good morning touchlt lots to talk about in the weather department as we have quite a few changes headed our way the next six to seven days. you might wonder why the fog has not been that dense lately. well, it has everything to do with that area of low pressure sitting offshore mixing up our atmosphere keeping that fog from settling to the surface. now, this morning the only place we do have reports of drizzle an a little bit of fog is from

>> and i'm jon kelley. good morning, everybody. simply put, today ijudgment day for suspended san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi. the board of supervisors is all set to vote on whether to remove him from office permanently. christie smith is live at city hall where that vote will be taken a little later on today. >> reporter: good morning to you. this has been playing out for nine long months here at city hall, in public and in the courts here in san francisco. and even san francisco political scientists who have been keeping an eye on this whole thing are saying they're not sure exactly what to expect today, and that's because this whole story has taken so many turns along the way. nine out of 11 supervisors would have to agree in order for sheriff ross mirkarimi to lose his job. in march, san francisco mayor ed lee suspended the new sheriff without pay after he pledded guilty to misdemeanor false imprisonment. that tied to an argument new year's eve with his wife.

she is an actress from venezuela. she ended up with a bruised arm. the couple has since reunited and said that this whole thing was politically motivated, but mirkarimi is still on probation and is in counseling. now, the mayor then tried to remove him permanently and the ethics commission decided that he had committed official misconduct and that leads us to today's vote. anti-domestic violence advocates say he really isn't fit to be sheriff because his job includes overseeing domestic violence programs an overseeing the jails. but mirkarimi who served as a supervisor for seven years also has his supporters and they say not reinstating him would be a setback for voters rights everywhere. they plan to hold a rally today at noon here on the steps of city hall. that's before the supervisors are expected to take a vote sometime after 2:00 this afternoon. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." president obama is waking up in san francisco this morning.

to tracie potts who's live on capitol hill. >> reporter: bob, from sfo he is headed to columbus, ohio, where the president has a rally scheduled at ohio state university today. one of his college crowds. this is a familiar area for the president. the focus in ohio for president obama will be less than fund-raising and more on vote rae raising. it is one of the key battleground states. that's also why we'll see mitt romney in ohio today in a different area. he'll be in summit county which is near akron. this is one of the counties that voted overwhelmingly for president obama four years ago, 57% for obama four years ago. so he's certainly trying to cut into that vote. it will be interesting to see if he uses this new phrase we heard yesterday about hope. remember hope from four years ago? what mitt romney is saying is hope is not a strategy, trying to tie the president's successful campaign slogan to his record over the last four years. he talked foreign policy

radiates back into the atmosphere. 55 degrees in stenson beach, 48 in petaluma, 48 in novato. sunnyvale 51 degrees. 50 here in san jose where i think we might drop to 48 degrees. so here's the setup. so the jetstream is like a river of air that takes your low-pressure system from west to east across the united states with a pretty quick current. as we head throughout the day today, we'll watch this cutoff low, which was cut off from the jetstream, get pushed inland by another area of low pressure. this has been sitting an spinning offshore for the past seven days and that's actually been mixing up our atmosphere keeping that dense fog from settling to the surface. we're talking about light autumn showers. very slight chance for isolated thunderstorms, mostly over our local mountains. but temperatures today will be comfortable. look at these number, 75 in livermore, 70 in san jose. oakland coliseum, you cannot take an umbrella but bring some

sort of rain gear, maybe a poncho because we are expecting some very light isolated activity out there. but that will just add to the drama. let's go a's, let's go giants. the whole bay area is behind you guys. as we head throughout the next couple days, we hold on to that cool, crisp air an drop off to the 60s by friday. then we'll warm up sunday into monday of next week only maxing out in the mid-80s and then another storm system comes through, that big system i just showed you will bring us pretty substantial showers. let's check your drive with mike. here's your northbound route past university, the mall and stuff over on that side. a smooth drive. look at the southbound side. this is the university avenue on-ramp. we lose a lane as you approach coming south toward the area out of menlo park and continue to lose another couple of lanes through the construction zone. you see these flashing lights. folks are down to two lanes as you head southbound and quite a

volume developing and slowdown as well. these crews should be clearing over the next 20 minutes so we'll track that but expect some delays south heading out of palo alto and down toward mountain view just for the time being. in the south bay itself that volume also starting. this is northbound 101 with these headlights. the first burst starting just before sick:6:00. on our speed sensors we see the slowing from 680 up to 880. that's about it. 280, 87, 85, all showing good volume and good speeds all the way in the northbound direction so there's the first one for the south bay. coming from the east bay, this is southbound 880 past tesla and mission boulevard. good volume. northbound an easy flow as well. you're at the limit through this portion of the nimitz and farther north. you're also holding steady past the oakland coliseum. we're looking at the north side with the taillights getting a little bunched up but speeds close to 60 through downtown

toward the bay bridge toll plaza where those cash lanes are starting to back up but no metering lights yet, a little too early for that. 5:47. today former penn state assistant football coach jerry sandusky will be sentenced on 45 counts related to child sexual abuse. we have a live look right now at the courthouse in bellefonte, pennsylvania, where sandusky will learn his fate. we just got word that he was led away from the jail in handcuffs. he is now on his way to this courthouse. he was convicted in june and faces anywhere from 60 to more than 400 years in prison. he continues to maintain his innocence and released a taped statement yesterday that said, quote, in my heart i know i did not do these alleged disgusting acts. sandusky is expected to speak before sentencing and so are some of his victims. the fbi has been called in to try and help hercules police investigate the killing of a well-known retired schoolteacher. more than 200 people joined susie ko's family last night for

a candlelight vigil that was out in front of her house. ko was found dead in that home, stabbed to death friday night. her husband became suspicious when she failed to pick him up at the airport. >> it defi-- she sent the first or 12 years looking after the kid. everybody treats her like everybody's mother. she offered her help to everybody. >> we're still looking for the vehicle. when it left here it had an idaho license plate to the best of our knowledge but we wanted to let the community know the plate may have been removed. >> you're looking at the suspect. the car is a sky blue subaru outback with idaho license plate number 1a1f680. the family has launched a website called welovesusieko.com. if you have any information on this case, please call hercules

police department or the fbi. there are more cases and more deaths caused by the meningitis outbreak that is linked to tainted steroid injections. the centers for disease control and prevention says the number of confirmed infections is up to 105 in nine states. eight people have now died from it. investigators believe the steroid wa cs contaminated and came from the new england compounding center which shipped steroid vials to doctors and clinics in 23 states. so far tennessee is reporting the most cases. new this morning, uc berkeley graduate david wineland and a french physicist are sharing this year's nobel prize in physics. the committee made the announcement this morning in sweden. they won for inventing methods to preserve properties of the quantum world, research that led to the construction of extremely precise clocks and helped scientists take the first step
